Lois van Baarle, perhaps better known as Loish, is an artist that I've admired for many years. Her illustrations are beautiful, whimsical, & often very colourful. Young women are one of her most frequent subjects, & they are almost always depicted as being happy & healthy, no weepy, twiggish girls for this artist. Lois herself comes across as a happy person, not to mention rather successful, with a masters degree in art from the Utrecht School of the Arts that she received just last year. Alice in Photographs

Abelardo Morell's photography tends to feel disorienting. He takes objects & situations that the audience is comfortable & familiar with & transforms the subject matter into something that is foreign, yet strangely recognizable, eliciting a dreamy, almost deja vu-like experience. Morell's series entitle Childhood draws up nostalgic, barely graspable, memories of being a very young child, while another series which he calls Alice in Wonderland straddles the line between reality & what it is to be immersed in a book. By viewing his photos it becomes easy to understand why his work has been a part of numerous exhibits in museums all over the world.

This week Thomas Gainsborough's famous painting, "The Blue Boy," was taken from its place in the Huntington museum for a little conservation work. Maybe that isn't too exciting, but for someone like me who enjoys the secret work that goes on behind a successful art museum, this photo set of the conservation is pretty cool. Conservators from The Getty (one of my favourite museums), were sent to work on the painting, their job included taking microscopic paint samples for analysis, & giving the work a new coat of varnish.

This online shopping goldmine sells unique pieces, adorable shoes, and great vintage finds, for affordable prices. I would love to buy about half their entire stock of shoes, & maybe three or four pairs of sweet sunglasses. It's a pretty small online store, but I hope it's around for a while (at least until my next paycheck).

I don't know why I ever stopped visiting The Sartorialist. The Sartorialist is a street fashion blog with beautiful photos in lush colours. One of my favourite things about this blog is that there are quite a few shots of well-dressed men, which something that I think should be celebrated more in the fashion world. Women are clamoring for more diverse body types to be featured in magazines & on runways, but I just want to see more men in shiny shoes & well-cut trousers!

They don't carry a lot of items, & I have to be frank & tell you that not every piece is a winner, but the pieces that are winners are marvelous. Purple is a sexy colour. Purple Diary is a very sexy diary. It's the official blog of Purple Fashion Magazine, & could possibly be better than the magazine itself (I really couldn't say though, since a subscription to the mag is extremely expensive). The blog consists mainly of black & white photographs shot by Olivier Zahm, lightly seasoned with illustrations from Purple Story, the non-official blog of Purple Magazine. The photos are like snapshots captured by a professional photographer, which, coincidentally, is exactly what they are. Olivier Zahm graciously invites you into his life with these snapshots of friends, models, his daughter Asia, other photographers, & the beautiful hidden places that they visit.

I've always had some kind of interest in education & academia. Since my freshman year of college this interest has only gotten stronger, which is why I thought I'd share with you some links that I've acquired that may be appealing to the intellectuals in the crowd.

Open Yale Courses
This was just brought to my attention today, so I can't tell you too much about it as yet, but it appears that Yale has podcasts of certain courses available for, well, anyone who's interested. Personally, I've got my eye (or perhaps ear) on Yale's course on death (look under philosophy).

UC Berkeley Webcasts
Of course, Berkeley can't be left out of this. This link will take you to their catalogue of spring 2009 podcast courses, but I believe you can peruse the archives for other courses if you so desire. I started listening to John Kihlstrom's Psych 1 about a year ago... didn't quite finish that, but I enjoyed the few classes I did listen to. There's also a more recent course on cognitive science if that tickles your fancy.

Jstor
Oooh, Jstor, how many times you've saved me from feeling like an idiot. Jstor is a marvelous archive of scholarly works on any subject you can think of, & probably some you can't. Of course, you have to access it through your university, so that is a major drawback to accessing this site. If you are currently in college though, & your school does have a subscription to Jstor, I highly, highly, recommend using it, regardless of whether you're writing a research paper or you're just very curious about the problems of stylistic relationships between Byzantium & the western world in the second half of the twelfth century. You can also access Artstor, an archive of images, through Jstor.

Alright folks, I have a quick confession to make. I haven't posted in so long because I was contemplating not posting ever again. But then I decided that it was kind of an asshole move (& a little creepy) to never post again but continue stealthily reading other people's blogs. Which is why I bring you this post.

Derek Jarman's "Wittgenstein" is an awesome film about the Austrian philosopher, Ludwig Wittgenstein. This is one of the best biographical films ever; it is funny, artistic, & a little strange. It also successfully tells the story of his life while at the same time explaining his philosophies in a way that isn't too difficult to understand. It's unfortunate that Wittgenstein couldn't explain himself this well during his own life. Below is a graphic with a quote by Wittgenstein (no relation to the film).

She Likes Colours Too

I am slowly gathering together a nice group of links to artist's websites/blogs, which is pretty fun. I enjoy seeing the work of people who are not involved with large museums (think LACMA), hardcore auctions (think Christie's), or super intense galleries (no example comes to mind for this one). I really like viewing the art made by people who are starting out, or have settled into a nice comfortable career, or are working on getting where they want to be, or are just having fun being artists in addition to whatever they're doing for actual moneys. So, with that introduction, let's look at the blog & website of a photographer that I stumbled across in the course of the past week.

Colormekatie is the website of freelance photographer Katie, which showcases her very colourful, upbeat artistic work, guaranteed to make you smile at least a wee bit (of course, it makes me smile enormously). Her blog, by the same name, reflects her photographs in being just as perky, happy, & colourful. I think what I found most charming, however, was how sweet & genuine she is.

Ffffound! is one of those sites that is highly addictive. Think YouTube or Myspace, but way more cool & stylish. I initially found it while browsing through Urban Outfitters' blog, clicked around & thought I'd never visit again. I was wrong. Ffffound! is best when you're bored, looking for awesome pictures (photos, computer art, drawings, etc.), or need to kill some time.

I can't say that I'm really surprised, I mean, the blogosphere allows for people to write on just about any niche topic they choose. But a candy blog? That's pretty niche. It is, as it sounds, a blog that reviews different candies, from chocolate to lollipops. I suppose if you're really curious about some new candy on the market but don't care to go out & taste test it yourself, this could be useful. Frankly, I like taking the plunge into new candy adventures with no prior knowledge of what to expect. Others may be more tentative, though, apparently.

Jen Stark is pretty cool. She is an artist who sculpts... paper! Trust me, this needs to be looked at. Her paper "sculptures" are truly unique, & her other artistic endeavors are very creative & fun as well. This is art that is guaranteed to make you feel at least a little happier.

Okay, for the record, Khalil Gibran's writing is way sexy. I seriously recommend picking up a copy of The Prophet (this particular edition on Amazon is really beautiful).

Moving on though, I came across this print today. I absolutely love it, the quote is beautiful, the colour is beautiful, & I am such a sucker for nice, clean lettering. If I had $25 to toss around I'd seriously considering making this purchase.

Great clothes, great shoes, great interior design stuff, sexy catalogue, super fun blog, & free downloadable playlists! There is nothing that is not to love.
